Soleado’s Arabella

In my post of July 17, I had mentioned that Bob and Regina Dart of Llano Soleado Alpacas had a female cria born to their dam Hearsum Abigail’s Rose but that there was some uncertainty as to who the sire was.

Rose was a maiden alpaca when she was bred, and had bred to our Windrush Jennifer’s Zindel but then later bred to one of Bob and Regina’s males (Rose actually managed to engineer her way into a pasture of male alpacas for the other breeding).  As sometimes happens with maiden female alpacas Rose’s subsequent behaviour made it hard to determine if she was pregnant or not, but by the fall of 2006 her pregnancy was confirmed, we just didn’t know whether the cria was going to be Zin’s or not.

Well yesterday Regina received the results of the DNA test on Rose’s cria Soleado’s Arabella and it’s now official that Zin is the sire!  Congratulations Zin that’s two beautiful daughters you have now, and congratulations to Bob and Regina – may all your ribbons from Arabella be blue or purple (blue is the color reserved for first place ribbons, purple is the color reserved for championship ribbons).

Regina has been pretty confident that Zin was the sire since Arabella was born as Arabella has the same heavy bone as Zin.  I could see that Arabella’s eyes were very much like Zin’s and so was hopeful that she was his daughter.  With the Alpaca Registry process of determining a crias sire and dam via DNA we were able to determine without a doubt that Zin is Arabella’s sire.

Rose is an alpaca that has a spectacular fleece that has done exceptionally well in fleece shows.  Zin is a multiple color champion who also has an exceptional fleece so the pairing of Zin and Rose was a good one.  Now it will be fun to watch little Arabella grow and hopefully follow in the footsteps of her award winning parents.

Zin’s next cria is due toward the end of September – can he produce daughter number three?  Well we will just have to wait and see but he’s always been such a special alpaca to me that I am optimistic that he will give me a nice string of daughters.
