Hanging in There

I called today to check on the sick cria I had mentioned in my previous post.  The owner of the cria had a long night caring for him and sounded very tired. The good news is he is still hanging on and his owner says he seemed a little perkier than the day before, the not so good news is that his temperature is now 106 and another cria at the farm has come down with the same illness.  The second crias temperature is also 106 and both crias have a lot of congestion in their lungs so pneumonia is suspected to be a problem in both the crias.

The area where the crias are is currently experiencing high heat and humidity and so the owner of the crias has brought them into the house so that she can keep a close eye on them and also allow them to recuperate in a stable temperature.       We will keep sending positive thoughts their way as they and their owners could really do with some good news.

We had our own incident of ill health yesterday when one of our males showed signs of the beginning of tick paralysis at evening chores.  We had noticed he had a slight head tilt on Sunday and had examined his ears with an otoscope.  We could see what looked like a tick in his ears but we were not sure.  We treated his ears for ticks and he seemed a little better but by yesterday evening he had a serious head tilt which was causing him to stumble and fall.  We again examined his ears with the otoscope and could not see any ticks, however we are aware that the anatomy of a camelids ear makes it really easy for ticks to hide deep in their ears.  We have treated his ears again for ear ticks and started him on an antibiotic.  Additionally we gave him some banamine to help reduce his pain and allow him to relax a little.  He seemed to improve some as the evening went on and was nibbling on some soaked beet pulp shreds that I had prepared for him when I did my late night check.

Any time you are dealing with livestock you will find yourself dealing at times with illness.  While alpacas are quite hardy when it comes to illness, every now and then something will come up that will challenge them and dealing with it may well challenge you.  Rosemary
