Today we have an early start, chores need to be done and the truck packed up to get us on the road by 8:30 a.m.  The reason for the early start?  We’re off to give a presentation at the 2007 New Mexico Agricultural Small Farm Conference and Trade Show in Moriarty, New Mexico.

This is the first year of the event and the conference and trade show will focus on small scale livestock and agricultural producers from New Mexico.  Various educational programs will be presented tailored to the needs of the small farm.  The conference started on Friday and will conclude today at 3:15 pm.

Our presentation is on “Alpacas – an alternative livestock”, we have approximately one hour allocated to us and will be using a PowerPoint presentation followed by a question and answer session.   It will be a good chance to talk to those interested in small farms and those who already have small farms and are looking to diversify.

Our presentation will cover the history of the alpaca, herd management and profitability of an alpaca farm.  Being the first year of the event it is difficult to gauge attendance but hopefully the event will be well attended and those in attendance will pass the word on to others so that next years event has even better attendance.

Having completed our presentation it will be time to hit the road and head on home.  Our weekend helper Bethany will be keeping an eye on things at the farm for us during the day and will have the evening chores done by the time we come home, which will be a nice treat for us.  With the clocks going back it will be dark by the time we get home and so it will be nice to know we don’t have to do chores in the dark.

The drive from Clovis to Moriarty is about three hours so we will take the time during the drive to talk about tasks we need to complete during the next week and bounce ideas of each other for future marketing and herd plans.  Of course I will have my knitting with me and look forward to making some progress on my latest fiber arts project – a lace scarf which is almost completed.   Today promises to be a long one, but I think it will be an enjoyable one too.
