A Taste of Life at Windrush Alpacas

Could this be “The Snots”?

The recent virus outbreak that has been experienced in the alpaca community continues, the virus is being referred to as “The Snots” as it typically causes alpacas to have a runny nose.  Unfortunately in some alpacas the virus has led to a form of pneumonia developing and some of those alpacas that contract pneumonia have died.

This weekend Ric is away at a training seminar in Colorado and as he traveled he heard a news article that spoke about a mutant cold virus that has been reported in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas that has resulted in ten people dying.

Coincidentally our friend Regina Dart of Llano Soleado Alpacas emailed me a link to an article on the CNN website that also talks of this mutant cold virus.

So is it possible that this is the same virus that is affecting alpacas?  According to the CNN report the virus has been identified as a form of adenovirus – AD14, but with some differences.

Some vets who have been researching the alpaca virus “The Snots” have said that it is not adenovirus, still it might be interesting to compare the virus being found in humans with the virus being found in alpacas.
